6th Day of Christmas - Rebecca's First Quilt - Hand Pieced English Paper Piecing

Rebecca's First Quilt - Hand Pieced English Paper Piecing
Rebecca's First Quilt - Hand Pieced English Paper Piecing

Did you use the 2020 lockdown to do something new? Rebecca made her first quilt top - isn't it amazing!  It is all hand pieced using English Paper Piecing and you can see from the photo below how she chose to finish of the awkward shaped edges by mounting it on a frame of grey fabric.

I remember making my first quilt top and then only at the end wondering how on earth I was going to quilt it.  Rebecca sent her quilt top to me by post to be longarm quilted and browsed my Pinterest page to choose the quilting pattern.  This time she chose 'Fluffy Clouds' designed by Beeny Girl Quilts and within the week it was quilted and she had it back again

Rebecca and her young family will be able to enjoy it for years to come and have a positive memory of the year 2020.

5th Day of Christmas - Karen's Beach Quilt

Karen's Beach Quilt - lighthouse, seagull
Karen's Beach Quilt
Even though we have passed the shortest day and the days are getting longer, it seems a long time until we will be on a summer holidays.  Karen has captured the spirit of the summer and the seaside in this Beach Quilt, featuring a lighthouse, a seagull, and some fish which look like sardines!  The navy and white fabrics give a stunning finish to this design and Karen chose to complement it with a stunning quilting pattern - Modern Curves.

4th Day of Christmas - Paula's Modern Lone Star Quilt

Paula's Modern Lone Star Quilt
Paula's Modern Lone Star Quilt
This is Paula's second Lone Star Quilt, you can see the first one here, which she did in French General fabrics.  This time she has done it in modern fabrics - they look so different!  This quilt has a lot of 'empty space', so the quilting pattern is going to play quite a major role in the final look.  With the modern fabric, we went with a   modern circle pattern - Cosmos. It looked amazing as it stitched out on my APQS longarm quilting machine.

It was quite a large quilt and Paula had purchased a quality King Size Dorma sheet from Dunelm Mill, which came up beautifully.

3rd Day of Christmas - Anita's Cheetah Quilt with Paw Prints, quilted at Fabadashery Longarm Quilting

Anita's Cheetah Quilt with Paw Prints
This is just one of the many quilts which I have been waiting to show you once Christmas gifting had been done.  This is Anita's first quilt.  It has a special 'cheetah' theme, so there were lots of big cat fabrics incorporated in it, as well as some fish for them to eat. (You know I love this sort of quilt!)

Anita's Cheetah Quilt with Paw Prints
Once I knew there was a theme to the quilt, I could not hold myself back in suggesting one of my 'Novelty November' quilt patterns 'Paw Prints' designed by Judy Vallely and Anita was up for it.  It was another perfect match.  I particularly like the pink background fabric as it looked like the pink pads on the cat's paw.

Anita also took advantage of my binding service and we added a quilt label with a special message and an embroidered cheetah! Glad to be of service.

2nd Day of Christmas - Pauline's Nine Sister's Fleece backed Quilt

'Nine Sisters' quilt made by Pauline
'Nine Sisters' quilt made by Pauline
Today I am sharing Pauline's quilt which she made for her son to use in his camper van.  The pattern is called 'Nine Sisters' designed by Cozy Quilt Designs and is Jelly Roll / 2.5" strip friendly. He had asked for a warm quilt, so you can see in the photo below that as well as the pieced quilt top this quilt has a fleece backing and 100% Hobbs Polydown wadding in the middle of it. This will be a big warm quilt!
A Warm Quilt Sandwich - top, polydown wadding and fleece
Pauline located some checked red and black fleece backing, which went well with the front of the quilt.  If you are thinking about having fleece on the back of your quilt, check the warp and the weft - as long as one has some tension in it, it can be mounted easily onto a longarm quilting machine. I have used it a lot on my own quilts and I love the result.

The quilting pattern we used on this quilt is called 'Diagonal Plaid Bias' designed by Patricia E Ritter.  It came up beautifully on the back of the quilt on the fleece.

1st Day of Christmas - Sue's Quilt SOS Liberty strip quilt

You may have read about Sue's Quilt SOS quilt on my Facebook Page . This quilt is heading off to the charity Hestia, supporting people in crisis. I know when Sue dropped it off we spent quite a bit of time admiring the lovely Liberty Tana lawn prints which he had managed to get from Alice Caroline Liberty Prints.  This quilt is heading of to the Quilt SOS charity, so it had to be suitable to anyone who received it, but one this was for sure, it was made with love and it was sending love with it. With that in mind, the lovely Ginger Hearts quilting pattern seemed a great match.

Novelty November - Christmas Holiday Garland Quilt

'Holiday Wishes' by Sherri Falls
'Holiday Wishes' by Sherri Falls
For Novelty November today I am sharing one of my own quilts which I managed to make over the summer and since I am including Christmas patterns I thought it would fit the bill for today. This quilt is a pattern from 'Holiday Wishes' by Sherri Falls.  I liked the simplicity of the design and wanted a quilt that I could cosy up in over the holidays.  I also had in mind that I wanted to try out a new digital quilting pattern - Holiday Garland designed by Patricia E Ritter, which has holly berries and a swirl.

Holiday Garland designed by Patricia E Ritter

I used a neutral thread, so that it did not dominate the front and so it would match the back. You can see from the photograph that I backed it with a plush fleece. so it is really cosy.  This particular one was a double fleece throw I picked up at Wilkinsons, so the fleece did not have any seams in it.

'Holiday Wishes' by Sherri Falls
I like to put something in the middle of my fleece backed quilts and on this occasion it was a thin, low loft polyester, which did not add too much bulk and would keep me warm.  I notice that some people are already putting up their Christmas decorations - so far all I have done is pull this out of the cupboard for use.

Starting off with 'Ginger Ice' designed by Apricot Moon, featuring snowflakes.  This is from the same family as Ginger Stars, Ginger Flowers, and Ginger Hearts, which always quilt out so beautifully.

Next, here are some holly leaves and holly berries, called 'Feliz Navidad' designed by Patricia E Ritter and Natalie Gorman. Mairi used this on her Wonky Christmas Tree quilt last year - it looked great!
The Gift Giver designed by Crystal Smythe

Finally for today, here is The Gift Giver, designed by Crystal Smythe.  This features a Christmas Tree and a Gift Giver, who knows it may be Santa if you have been good!  Remember, if your quilt top is too busy to see this sort of pattern on the front, it will be seen on the back if you choose a plain backing.

Novelty November - Rugby Ball Quilt made by Margaret

So you have made a quilt for everyone in the family, what quilt can you make for sports mad men and women in your life? Margaret has great ideas and vision, and between us we can usually come up with something that we are both pleased with.  This time it was a rugby quilt for her grandson - who loves rugby.

The internet has loads of different digital quilting patterns which can be purchased and a quick look and I found this quilt pattern for a longarm quilting machine featuring rugby balls / footballs (depending on which continent you are in!)  With many of my customers living in Wales, I felt it would get plenty of use in the future.

Margaret's Rugby Quilt

Margaret wanted to include some words and symbols on the quilt and I was able to help her out by using my Accuquilt Studio cutter and the use of a lightbox to create the imagery above.  The rugby balls  make great background and the reverse of the quilt had the team colours.  A great sporty quilting pattern.

Do you have a musician in your family?  I do and there was a request for a quilt! ... but no piecing .... no problem, I like a challenge.

Using a sheet for a quilt
I knew I had a musical digital quilting pattern in my collection, so I thought I would do a whole cloth quilt with this quilt pattern all over it.  I started with a sheet from Dunelm, a Dorma 300 thread count sateen sheet in Seafoam - Popcorn and I knew it would be the perfect choice.  Then on the back I put a silver fleece throw from Wilkinsons (for £10!).  It all stitched out beautifully and was soft and cuddly.  I also put a thin polyester wadding in the middle.

Above you can see the back with the pattern stitched out on the fleece.  Another of the 'Novelty November' quilt patterns that are available to my customers featuring musical instruments including a saxophone, a piano, a trumpet, a cello and a guitar.  It is quite busy, but on the plain sheet it was perfect.
