Advent Day 12 - Rhoda's Down the Veggie Patch Baby Quilt with Bottom Line Thread

Rhoda's Down the Veggie Patch Baby Quilt with Bottom Line Thread
Rhoda's Down the Veggie Patch Baby Quilt with Bottom Line Thread
There are lots of different opinions out there with regard to longarm quilting.  One concern is that the quilting can look TOO much on a quilt.  The above photo is of Rhoda's lovely 'Down the Veggie Patch' quilt - can you see the quilting?  The prints in this quilt had a light etched quality and a normal 40 weight thread may have looked too heavy, so instead I suggested a thinner 60 weight thread.  In this case it was Superior Threads Bottom Line 60wt in Ivory.  I used this on the top and the bottom and I often suggest this as a solution for group quilts which have hand writing or signatures on them, especially when they need to be clearly read.

Another way to push back the quilting is to use a pattern which is quite open and balanced, in this case we used 'Dragon Wings' which went well with the nature / garden theme.

All I know is that every quilt that comes in my door is different and requires its own special , individual attention. This is one of Rhoda's first quilts - she did an amazing job!

This is Mary's Friendship Plait quilt, done in soft traditional prints.  The reason I have chosen to show you this lovely quilt is because the digital quilting pattern she chose was the ever popular 'Modern Curves'.  Usually this quilt pattern is popular on modern and contemporary prints, but look how stunning it looks on this quilt, emphasising the vertical plaits.

Advent Day 9 - Barbara's Judie Rothermel Row By Row Quilt

Barbara has made this Judie Rothermal Row by Row quilt in lovely coloured fabrics.  Barbara always makes lovely quilts and with a queue of lovely quilts waiting for her busy fingers, Fabadashery Longarm Quilting helps out by doing the quilting for her.

Looking at this photo, it looks like it was the first quilt I completed in Fabadashery's new home - the room next door to where I used to do all my quilting.

I have taken a photo of the back of the quilt. Barbara chose a lovely soft grey rose patterned fabric.  I think it is important to choose the fabric for the back of quilt carefully.  If you will be having a digital quilting pattern, you will have a beautiful even pattern across the back, which will serve as a quilt on its own, as you can see here.  The pattern Barbara chose for her quilt was Wave on Wave  designed by Patricia Ritter.

At the beginning of the year I had the pleasure of quilting this beautiful 'Caswell' Quilt for Julia, who is a member of the Little Coxwell Quilters.  This is a picture of it just as I had taken it of the quilting frame - perhaps my favourite part of the longarm quilting process.  If I catch the sun at the right time of day, it crosses the quilt emphasising all the quilting I have just done.

This is not the first Caswell Quilt I have done (and I know it will not be the last!).  Several ladies in the same talented group have made the same quilt, adding their own personal twist.

Advent Day 7 - Dear Jane Quilt made by Sheila

Having made a Dear Jane quilt myself, when one walks through the door of Fabadashery Longarm Quilting, I really appreciate the hard work that has gone into completing it.  This one was made by Sheila and the soft palette of colours she choose for the different Dear Jane blocks gave us a few options with quilting.

Sheila was happy with an allover pattern in a Warm Grey 4 Glide thread - this allowed the piecing she had done to shine.  The digital quilting pattern she chose was 'Popcorn' by Willow Leaf Studio.  Since I have been longarm quilting this particular pattern has to be the most versatile pattern I have in my library - if all else fails consider Popcorn!

Advent Day 6 - Some Scraps Are Bigger Than Others - Fabadashery Quilts on Tour in 2020!

My exciting week continues, as through the letterbox today I received a copy of the Grosvenor Shows Quilting and Needlecraft 2020 Exhibition Schedule.
Behind the scenes this year I have been preparing for my own quilts to go on display at their exhibitions between January and June 2020, which will include venues at Newark, Ardingly, Harrogate, Duxford, Exeter, Malvern, Spalding and Sandown.  Scattered throughout the leaflet of are photos of my quilts which you can expect to see at my display 'Some Scraps Are Bigger Than Others'.
I still have some work to do before they are collected, but there is nothing like a deadline to get things done.

Advent Day 4 - Barbara's Aves Quilt featured in Quiltmania magazine Nov - Dec 2019

'Aves Quilt' made by Barbara Gillespie,
APQS Longarm quilted by Frances Meredith, Fabadashery Longarm Quilting
I had a very exciting email today - Barbara, one of my longarm quilting customers, contacted me to say that the 'Aves' quilt I had custom quilted for her is part of a feature article on the Festival of Quilts in the Nov/Dec 2019 Quiltmania magazine.  Barbara had signed up for the Kathryn Kerr 'Aves' Block of the Week and made a beautiful job of the intricate piecing.  Knowing the time it takes to hand piece a quilt like this, I was keen to make sure the quilting enhanced it.

This is how it looked after I had just taken it of my APQS longarm quilting machine at the end of June.  It was posted to Barbara in Scotland where she finished it off then promptly sent to the Festival of Quilts in August.
I haven't seen the full article, but I have asked Father Christmas for a Quiltmania subscription ....

Advent Day 3 - Duck baby Quilt made by Penny, quilted by Fabadashery Longarm Quilting

I am taking this time of year to share with you some of the quilts I have had the pleasure of doing over the last twelve months and on this 3rd day of Advent I am sharing a cute baby quilt made by Penny for her grandchild.  The theme of the nursery is ducks and Penny has appliqued some lovely animals onto the quilt.

To compliment the gentle colours and pattern, I was able to seek out a simple meander quilting pattern which featured ducks on it  - a perfect compliment.  If you have a theme for your quilt, there is usually, somewhere, a digital quilting pattern which will compliment it.  Just ask and I will see what I can find.

Advent Day 2 - New Pattern - Sweet Orange Peel

Sweet Orange Peel digital quilting pattern
designed by Leisha Farnsworth
With the Black Friday sales almost over now, I took the opportunity to pick up some new quilting patterns for my longarm quilting customers.  This one is called Sweet Orange Peel - I think this would lovely on a tradition hexagon quilt.  I can't wait to see what comes through my door in 2020 - I hope to get to use it soon.

Advent Day 1 - French General Hand Pieced Hexagon quilt, made by Mercedes

French General Hexagon Quilt made by Mercedes
French General Hexagon Quilt made by Mercedes
Do you have a hand piecing patchwork project on the go? I love my hand piecing and I like that it can have it with me wherever I need to take it.  Mercedes brought me this huge hexagon quilt which she has been working on for a long time, using Moda French General fabrics (her favourite!) The hexagons are random, but because she used the same range of fabric, they blend beautifully.

There are a couple of things to think about when making a hexagon quilt - the layout, how big is it / do I need it to be , and how will I finish off the edges.  With regard to the last one, you can see in the photo that the edge has the zig zag of the hexagon shape.  Mercedes asked me to quilt the whole quilt and she was going to cut the quilted edges straight before she bound it. The pattern which she chose to go allover her quilt was Squirts - one of the new patterns I purchased in the 2018 Black Friday sales.  It was the first quilt I used the pattern on and I loved it so much that I used it on one of my own quilts.  Indeed, it has become one of my more popular patterns in the last year.
